Veteran sports journalist Toyin Ibitoye has endorsed renewing Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle’s contract. He praised Chelle’s ability to build a disciplined, competitive team capable of challenging for Africa Cup of Nations titles. Despite Nigeria not winning the last AFCON, Ibitoye noted the team’s performance impressed many fans worldwide. “Nigeria did not win the tournament, but their football style captured hearts,” he said.
He emphasized that discipline on and off the pitch often matters more than luck in determining tournament outcomes. Ibitoye highlighted that consistent coaching is crucial for long-term success. Frequent changes disrupted Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying campaigns, he explained. “Three different coaches managed the Super Eagles during qualifiers, and results suffered,” he stated.
Maintaining Chelle could consolidate progress and enhance the team’s performance in future competitions. Looking ahead to AFCON 2026 and 2028, Ibitoye believes Chelle has the potential to lead Nigeria to victory. “With proper preparation and some luck, Nigeria could win one or even two upcoming tournaments,” he added. Chelle reportedly requested a salary increase from $50,000 to $130,000 monthly to improve working conditions and support his technical staff.
However, he denied threatening to leave the team. The coach reaffirmed his commitment to leading Nigeria in upcoming international friendlies against Iran and Jordan. Fans and experts alike await decisions from the Nigeria Football Federation regarding the coach’s future. Continuing Chelle’s leadership could ensure stability and success for the Super Eagles.
