The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially declared Morocco as winners of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following a controversial ruling that overturned the original final result.
According to updated records, Morocco are now listed as champions, with Senegal as runners-up and Nigeria finishing third.
The decision followed a ruling by CAF’s Appeals Board on March 18, which nullified Senegal’s 1–0 extra-time victory in the final played in Rabat. The match had been marred by controversy, including a walk-off by Senegalese players over a disputed penalty decision.
CAF ruled that Senegal forfeited the match, awarding a 3–0 victory to Morocco and handing them their second continental title.
The decision has sparked widespread debate, with critics questioning its impact on sporting integrity. Senegal’s football federation has announced plans to challenge the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe defended the decision, stating that the organisation remains committed to upholding the rules and integrity of the competition.
