A tragic gas explosion rocked the Ajah axis of Lagos, leaving destruction in its wake. The incident claimed two lives and destroyed multiple properties early Saturday morning.
The explosion occurred along the busy Lekki-Epe Expressway at Tera Ahmed bus stop, Sangotedo. Reports indicate a collision between a gas tanker and a speeding tipper truck triggered the fire.
According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, emergency responders acted swiftly. Firefighters from Lekki Phase II, Oniru, and Epe stations arrived promptly at the scene.
Officials revealed that the tipper truck rammed into a stationary gas tanker. The tanker had reportedly failed to pull over completely from the highway. Consequently, the impact sparked a massive fire that spread rapidly.
The inferno engulfed three warehouses and at least ten roadside shops nearby. A gym facility and a generator house were also affected during the blaze. However, firefighters managed to contain the situation before further escalation.
Importantly, emergency teams prevented the fire from reaching a nearby petrol station. They successfully saved a fully loaded fuel tanker and other valuable assets.
Tragically, the tipper driver and his assistant lost their lives in the incident. Both victims were burnt beyond recognition, while the tanker driver escaped unharmed.
After extinguishing the fire, responders recovered several damaged vehicles from the premises. These included buses, a car, and a forklift.
Authorities have since begun clearing the wreckage to restore normal traffic flow. Meanwhile, residents continue to assess the extent of losses.
