The Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Team is set to compete in the 2026 IWBF Africa 3×3 Championship. The tournament will take place in Luanda, Angola, from March 22 to 27. This championship serves as the qualifying event for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Eight Nigerian athletes will represent the country after a two-week closed training camp in Abuja. The camp ran from March 8 to 21 at Package B of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium. Athletes underwent intensive drills, conditioning, and strategy sessions to prepare for the continental competition.
Seyi Johnson, President of the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation, expressed confidence in the team’s performance ahead of departure. He praised their resilience, determination, and preparation, emphasizing Nigeria’s chance to secure Commonwealth Games qualification.
Johnson highlighted the broader significance of inclusive sports development in Nigeria. He noted that the team’s participation reflects the nation’s commitment to empowering athletes with disabilities.
The National Sports Commission also received commendation for supporting the team throughout the preparation process. Johnson stated that the commission created an enabling environment, ensuring proper facilities and resources were available.
With strong leadership, rigorous preparation, and athlete dedication, Nigeria aims to excel on the continental stage. The team’s performance in Angola will determine qualification for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The Commonwealth Games are scheduled for July 24 to August 1 at the SEC Centre in Glasgow. Nigerian fans are hopeful that the wheelchair basketball squad will showcase skill, teamwork, and determination on the international stage.
