Iran national football team is still expected to participate in the upcoming FIFA World Cup in North America despite security concerns linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
Officials from the Asian Football Confederation said there had been no official confirmation that Iran would withdraw from the tournament, which will be co-hosted by United States, Canada and Mexico.
The AFC General Secretary, Windsor Paul John, said the confederation was monitoring the situation but expected the team to participate.
His comments follow a warning from US President Donald Trump, who said the Iranian team’s “life and safety” could be at risk if they attended the tournament.
Meanwhile, controversy also surrounds the Iran women’s national football team after some members of its delegation sought asylum in Australia following criticism at home for refusing to sing the national anthem during the AFC Women’s Asian Cup.
Officials said several players later withdrew their asylum requests, while the AFC stated it would support whatever decision the athletes make regarding their future.
