Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (Nigeria), has joined the African Democratic Congress. He officially registered as a party member in Agulu, his hometown in Anambra State. Obi completed the registration exercise on Saturday in Aniocha Local Government Area.
However, he immediately criticised the newly passed Electoral Act 2026. Consequently, he announced plans to challenge the law in court. According to him, the new provisions could enable electoral manipulation. He argued that the law threatens the credibility of future elections.
Furthermore, Obi accused the Independent National Electoral Commission of exceeding its constitutional mandate. He insisted the electoral body should focus on conducting credible national elections. However, he warned that INEC should not dictate internal political party processes. He compared the commission’s role to a referee during a football match.
Therefore, he argued referees should officiate games, not select players. Obi also alleged the law appears designed to benefit the ruling party. Moreover, he claimed the legislation could influence the 2027 presidential election outcome. Meanwhile, Obi urged supporters to intensify grassroots mobilisation nationwide. He highlighted that Anambra State has about 2.8 million registered voters.
Consequently, he encouraged citizens to register and participate actively in elections. In addition, Obi emphasised unity among opposition political groups. He said the South-East region continues consultations with other regions. According to him, opposition forces aim to build a stronger political alliance.
Furthermore, Obi criticised Nigeria’s worsening socio-economic conditions. He argued the country remains among the poorest despite abundant natural resources. Nevertheless, he expressed optimism about building a fair and prosperous Nigeria. Meanwhile, ADC leaders welcomed Obi’s membership as a major political milestone. They believe his presence could strengthen the party ahead of future elections.
