Ashleigh Plumptre, Super Falcons defender has voiced concern about the recent postponement of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. She believes frequent schedule adjustments undermine the growth and stability of the competition.
The Confederation of African Football recently confirmed that the tournament will take place later than originally planned. Organisers initially scheduled the competition for March 17 to April 3, 2026. However, officials later shifted the dates to July 25 through August 16, 2026.
CAF explained that operational and planning issues influenced the decision to reschedule. The organisation also noted that it consulted with football authorities and other stakeholders before confirming the change.
Plumptre reacted by questioning why African women’s tournaments often experience such disruptions. She suggested that competitions of similar importance in other regions rarely face repeated adjustments.
According to the defender, the significance of WAFCON extends beyond World Cup qualification. She stressed that the tournament has always played a major role in developing women’s football across Africa.
Despite her concerns, Plumptre acknowledged the importance of the upcoming edition. The 2026 tournament will expand to include 16 national teams, marking a historic change for the competition.
The event will also serve as a qualification pathway for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will take place in Brazil. As a result, several teams will compete for a chance to reach the global stage.
Ashleigh Plumptre added that many countries participating in the tournament will be making their first appearance. She believes the competition offers important exposure and financial opportunities for emerging teams.
However, she also pointed out that constant schedule changes create challenges for players’ preparations. Athletes often adjust their plans because they have little influence over organisational decisions.
The defender concluded that professionalism remains essential despite these uncertainties. She emphasised the need for players to stay focused and prepared regardless of scheduling changes.
