Paediatricians have cautioned that injections administered by unqualified individuals can seriously harm children. Such unsafe practices may damage nerves permanently and affect a child’s ability to walk.
Health specialists emphasised that injections should only be given by trained medical professionals. They explained that poor technique, especially around the buttocks, can injure vital nerves.
Medical experts noted that injections must not be placed carelessly in any area of the buttocks. A wrongly placed injection can damage the sciatic nerve and lead to lasting disability.
Dr Beatrice Ezenwa, a paediatric specialist at the University of Lagos, highlighted the importance of proper training. She explained that healthcare workers learn the exact anatomical locations for safe injections during medical education.
Ezenwa, who also works at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, warned about the risks posed by unqualified practitioners. According to her, many complications occur when individuals without medical training attempt to give injections.
She noted that some people mistakenly believe injections can be administered anywhere on the buttocks. However, ignoring proper guidelines can result in severe nerve injuries and long-term health problems.
The paediatrician added that trained professionals follow clear medical protocols when giving injections. As a result, the chances of complications remain low when proper procedures are followed.
Another child health expert, Dr Olatunde Odusote, also warned about the dangers of incorrect injection methods. He explained that nerve injuries are often permanent once they occur.
Odusote further explained that doctors divide the buttocks into four sections before giving injections. The upper outer part is generally considered the safest location.
However, many vaccines for children are now administered in the thigh. This approach helps reduce the risk of accidental nerve damage.
