Iranian state television has reported that Iran struck a US oil tanker with a missile in the Persian Gulf on Thursday, escalating tensions in the region.
According to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, the vessel was hit in the northern part of the Gulf and caught fire after the attack. The claim has not been independently confirmed.
The Guards also stated that they now have “full control” of the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime route linking the Gulf to the Indian Ocean and a major corridor for global oil and gas shipments.
Earlier, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, accused the United States of committing an “atrocity” after allegedly sinking the Iranian navy frigate IRIS Dena near Sri Lanka.
Araghchi claimed the vessel, which he said was carrying nearly 130 sailors and visiting India’s navy, was struck in international waters without warning. He warned that the United States would “bitterly regret” the action.
