The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has partnered with the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa(AGRA) to scale priority post-harvest technologies aimed at reducing Nigeria’s ₦3.5 trillion annual agricultural losses.
The collaboration was highlighted at a validation workshop in Abuja reviewing the Market and Business Case Analysis for Priority Post-Harvest Technologies under the Nigeria Postharvest Legacy Programme.
Minister Abubakar Kyari noted that past interventions focused on production while neglecting post-harvest value chains, costing farmers income and threatening food security.
AGRA’s Nigeria Country Director, Rufus Idris, represented by Theophilus Raymond, emphasised private-sector participation and innovative financing, citing storage systems and warehouse receipt schemes as viable investments.
The study mapped 72 storage facilities across six geopolitical zones and identified nine high-impact investment nodes, including hermetic bags, solar-powered cold rooms, and smart silos, with projected returns above 40% and payback periods as short as two years.
Stakeholders recommended fiscal incentives, support for women-led cooperatives, and youth-driven digital tools to professionalise Nigeria’s post-harvest ecosystem, improve food safety, and stabilise prices.
