Linguists and cultural advocates have expressed concern over the decline of indigenous languages as Nigeria marked the 2026 International Mother Language Day. The day is observed globally by UNESCO on Feb. 21.
Stakeholders said many young Nigerians, especially in urban areas, can no longer speak their mother tongues due to a preference for English and Pidgin.
They called for policy reforms, parental commitment and greater integration of indigenous languages into education, technology and media to prevent cultural erosion and preserve Nigeria’s heritage.
