The Director-General of the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD), Dr. Obi Adigwe, has urged Nigeria to prioritise medicine security.
Speaking at a capacity-building workshop supported by the World Bank IMPACT project and the National Malaria Elimination Programme, Adigwe said the COVID-19 pandemic exposed Nigeria’s dependence on imported drugs.
He stressed the need for stronger local production, regulatory compliance and research capacity to ensure safe, affordable and accessible medicines.
Participants noted that strengthening domestic pharmaceutical capacity would reduce shortages, curb counterfeit drugs and improve healthcare delivery nationwide.
