The Association for Table Water Producers of Nigeria (ATWAP) has called for stronger collaboration with government regulators. Outgoing National President, Dr. Clementina Ativie, highlighted illegal production as a key challenge affecting the industry. Speaking at the National Delegates Convention in Kano, she reflected on her eight-year tenure and emphasized the association’s achievements in regulating sachet and bottled water nationwide.
The convention, held every four years, brings together delegates to elect new national executives. Previous conventions took place in Rivers State in 2017 and Abuja in 2019. Ativie first assumed office in 2017 and was re-elected in 2021, serving diligently throughout her tenure. She noted that ATWAP represents water producers across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, ensuring production meets safety standards to prevent public health hazards.
Illegal water production, including the use of counterfeit NAFDAC registration numbers, continues to threaten consumer safety. Membership in ATWAP is voluntary, which limits its ability to enforce compliance over non-registered producers. However, Ativie urged stronger government support to curb illegal water production effectively. Distribution drivers play a key role in identifying suspicious products and helping regulators detect unauthorized operations.
ATWAP maintains collaboration with NAFDAC, NESREA, and SON to uphold consistent industry standards. Ativie stressed that proper packaging and water treatment are critical to avoiding contamination risks. She also highlighted the association’s regular interface with the National Assembly on food safety legislation.
As she concluded her tenure, Ativie encouraged the new executive council to prioritize unity among table water producers. She emphasized that collaboration strengthens compliance, protects consumers, and enhances industry credibility. The Kano convention marked a new chapter for ATWAP, introducing fresh leadership to navigate regulatory, operational, and public health challenges while promoting safe water production across Nigeria.
