The Kwara State Government has debunked social media claims about a corps member’s death. The Ministry of Health clarified reports on Tuesday through Press Secretary Saad Hamdalat.Investigations were conducted by the state’s Rapid Response Team following a viral social post.
State Epidemiologist Dr. Kamaldeen Khadeejah led the probe into the alleged Lassa fever case. Field investigations found no evidence of Lassa fever infection or transmission in the NYSC camp. No suspected or confirmed viral haemorrhagic fever cases were recorded among corps members. However, surveillance at the camp has been intensified as a precautionary public health measure.
The Rapid Response Team reinforced infection prevention practices at the camp clinic. Health workers and corps members received training on Lassa fever symptoms and early reporting. Dr. Kamaldeen urged the public to ignore unverified reports and rely on official sources. NYSC State Coordinator Olaoluwa Onifade clarified that the corps member had a chronic illness.
The member received external medical care and later died outside the camp environment. Environmental Health Officer Adamu Kabiru encouraged proper sanitation and effective rodent control. He stressed the importance of sanitary dustbins and discouraging bush burning near residences. Health Promotion Officer Jubril Abdul Kareem educated corps members on Lassa fever prevention.
He advised avoiding rat contact and storing food safely to reduce infection risk. The state confirmed the public health risk remains low but recommended continued vigilance. Kwara authorities assured citizens that early detection measures remain active at all camp facilities.
