Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, announced on Thursday that his administration has institutionalized a merit-based system. He revealed plans to establish additional institutions before his tenure ends to strengthen governance.
Speaking at a symposium marking Oyo State’s fiftieth anniversary at the University of Ibadan, Makinde emphasized strong institutions over individual leadership. He stated, “Leadership must be supported by strong institutions to ensure enduring good governance.”
Governor Makinde listed existing institutions created by his administration, highlighting their role in promoting sustainable development across the state. He further revealed plans for a new roadmap to guide Oyo State’s growth beyond 2027. The roadmap, he said, would align with Agenda 2040, ensuring long-term progress for citizens.
He cautioned aspirants eyeing his position against taking the people for granted, citing the overwhelming support and engagement observed during recent celebrations. Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, congratulated Makinde and praised Oyo State’s people for their generosity. In a keynote address, Prof. Olu Ajakaiye lauded the governor for modernizing the state’s development agenda, integrating past projects, and fostering transparency and accountability.
Prof. Ajakaiye called for legal backing for the newly created institutions and urged efforts to eliminate insecurity and criminality. The symposium included former governors, traditional rulers, ministers, commissioners, and other dignitaries, highlighting the significance of collaboration in driving Oyo State’s progress.
