Meta has paused access to its AI characters for all users under 18 worldwide, temporarily preventing teens on Instagram, Messenger, and other Meta apps from using personality-based AI chats and virtual companions.
The move is part of Meta’s plan to introduce a new version of its AI characters with stronger safety features, improved parental controls, and clearer guidelines for teen interactions. While teens will still be able to use basic AI tools for tasks such as homework help and factual queries, access to AI characters will remain restricted.
Meta said the decision is aimed at protecting young users, amid growing global concerns about the effects of AI-driven interactions and social media on teenagers’ mental health and wellbeing. The company added that teen access will be gradually restored once the enhanced safety measures are fully in place.
