The Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation organised a one-day mental health awareness programme in Lagos. The initiative was implemented through the ministry’s Domestic Violence Unit to support survivors of abuse. The programme focused on survivors of sexual and gender-based violence across Lagos communities.
The event took place at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Alausa. Importantly, it brought together professionals, stakeholders, faith leaders, and community participants. The gathering addressed the growing need for mental health care among survivors of violence.
Speaking at the event, Commissioner Bolaji Dada highlighted the lasting effects of gender-based violence. She explained that emotional and psychological trauma often outlives physical injuries. Accordingly, she stressed the importance of healing, resilience, and mental wellbeing.
She noted that recovery supports successful reintegration into families, workplaces, and communities. Furthermore, the programme aligned with the THEMES Plus Agenda of Lagos State. The agenda prioritises social inclusion, human capital development, and responsive governance.
The programme’s theme focused on resilience-building and improved access to support services. Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary Rianat Onigbanjo described the initiative as impactful and enlightening. She reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to expanding mental health support.
Participants received guidance on trauma management and healthy coping strategies. They also learned about counselling services and government support structures. Additionally, facilitators encouraged survivors to seek help without fear or stigma.
The ministry assured participants of confidentiality and professional care. Onigbanjo commended survivors for their courage and openness. She assured them of sustained government support throughout recovery.
