An endocrinologist in Bauchi, Dr. Ayuba Mugana, warns that smokers face higher diabetes risk. He also highlights that individuals with cholesterol-related health issues are significantly vulnerable.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday, Dr. Mugana explained diabetes clearly. He described it as a chronic condition affecting the body’s ability to convert food into energy. Diabetes occurs when blood sugar levels rise too high, triggering serious health complications.
Common symptoms include frequent urination, extreme thirst, sudden weight loss, and intense hunger. Dr. Mugana emphasized, “Smoking disrupts insulin function and triggers inflammation in the body.” Insulin regulates blood sugar and allows cells to absorb glucose for energy production.
The doctor clarified that heredity or high blood pressure alone do not cause diabetes. Smokers and individuals with cholesterol issues also face elevated risks of the disease. He debunked myths comparing local and broiler chickens for diabetic patients.
Local chickens are leaner due to natural feeding and free movement, unlike broilers. However, broiler chicken consumption can remain safe if individuals remove excess skin. Recent reports show that youths are increasingly developing diabetes, urging lifestyle adjustments.
“Diabetes often begins with insulin resistance and may take 10–15 years to appear,” he added. Dr. Mugana urges everyone to adopt balanced diets, regular exercise, and avoid smoking.
