Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, widely known as Portable, faced criminal charges on Monday. He appeared before the Federal High Court sitting in Ota, Ogun State. The charges include assault, resisting arrest, and obstruction of police officers.
Ogun State Police confirmed the arraignment through spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi. He stated that officers arrested and remanded the singer on Monday. The confirmation followed widespread public interest and online discussions. Meanwhile, a viral video emerged showing Portable in distress while handcuffed.
The footage captured him shirtless, emotional, and seated inside a police facility. The video triggered mixed reactions across social media platforms. Authorities linked his arrest to assault allegations involving Ashabi Simple.
Ashabi Simple is a skit maker, actress, and one of Portable’s baby mamas. She is also the mother of two of his children. Prosecutors alleged that the incident occurred on New Year’s Day. They claimed the attack happened at Portable’s bar in Iyana Ilogbo.
Police officers and other individuals were reportedly assaulted during the incident. Additionally, prosecutors accused the singer of stealing a Mercedes-Benz E300. The vehicle reportedly belongs to Ileyemi Damilola. Its estimated value stands at twelve million naira.
Several individuals appeared on the charge sheet as alleged victims. Two siblings of Ashabi Simple testified before the court. However, Ashabi did not appear during the proceedings. The court also heard allegations involving a female police inspector.
Police said Portable assaulted her while she performed official duties. Consequently, the presiding judge denied Portable bail. The judge cited the absence of the assaulted officer.
The court adjourned the bail hearing until January 19. Meanwhile, police ordered an investigation into alleged custody assault footage.
