The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Government and the National Assembly to restoring Nigeria’s status as one of the most peaceful and secure countries in Africa.
Akpabio made this known through the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Peter Nwebonyi, who represented him at the Inter-Denominational Church Service for the Armed Forces Remembrance Day 2026, held on Sunday in Abuja.
He said the government remained focused on creating a peaceful and secure environment that would enable both present and future generations to thrive.
“Let me assure you that the Federal Government, in collaboration with the National Assembly, is committed and resolute in its efforts to restore Nigeria as one of the most peaceful and secure nations in Africa,” he said.
“The sacrifices we commemorate today strengthen our resolve to build a safer, stronger and more united Nigeria.”
Commitment to Religious Freedom and Unity
Akpabio also emphasised the importance of Nigeria’s constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion, worship and conscience, describing them as fundamental pillars of the nation’s democracy and peaceful coexistence.
He noted that Nigeria is one of the most linguistically and culturally diverse countries in the world, with over 500 languages spoken across different ethnic, religious and cultural groups.
“We are Christians, Muslims and adherents of traditional beliefs, united under one flag and one destiny. Our Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, freedom of worship and freedom of conscience,” he said.
“These freedoms are the pillars upon which our democracy stands, and they must be protected at all times.”

The Senate President paid tribute to members of the Armed Forces who lost their lives in the line of duty, describing their sacrifices as the foundation of Nigeria’s unity, peace and progress.
He added that the decisions and actions taken by today’s leaders would shape the country’s future, stressing that national stability and security remain central to the well-being of future generations.
