Silagreen International Agro Development Limited has unveiled Nigeria’s first embryo transfer-born Girolando calf. The historic birth occurred at Harmony Farms in Odogbolu, Ogun State. The Nigerian agri-biotech firm described the development as a major breakthrough for the country’s dairy industry. Accordingly, the milestone supports the Federal Government’s drive toward improved food security.
Silagreen’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Akinruli, highlighted the calf’s economic and agricultural significance. He described the birth as the beginning of a new era for dairy productivity. Furthermore, he explained that improved dairy income would strengthen rural livelihoods and farming communities. The healthy female calf emerged from Silagreen’s Advanced Tropical Genetic Improvement Programme, which operates through the company’s specialised embryo transfer centres nationwide. Importantly, several additional calves are expected before March 2026.
Akinruli revealed that Silagreen deployed advanced Brazilian embryo transfer technology. This approach introduces superior tropical bovine genetics into Nigerian herds. When mature, the Girolando calves can produce between 30 and 50 litres of milk daily. The Girolando breed combines Holstein productivity with Gyr resilience. As a result, the breed thrives under Nigeria’s heat and environmental conditions. Akinruli noted the calves represent tangible long-term assets for dairy farmers.
Moreover, the programme accelerates genetic improvement within a single generation. This advancement reduces mortality rates and lowers veterinary costs significantly. Silagreen also emphasized improved herd health and stronger production sustainability. The firm has begun engaging policymakers and agricultural institutions to scale the programme nationwide. Additionally, Silagreen seeks financing partnerships to expand farmer access.
Chairman Dr Amos Ayodele praised the initiative’s alignment with national food security goals. He warned that dairy imports continue draining Nigeria’s foreign reserves. Overall, the project promises job creation, technology transfer, and long-term growth toward dairy self-sufficiency.
