The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced new public holidays for the 2025 festive season. Accordingly, Thursday, December 25, and Friday, December 26, 2025, are declared public holidays nationwide. These holidays mark the Christmas and Boxing Day celebrations across the country. In addition, the government approved Thursday, January 1, 2026, as a public holiday. This declaration allows Nigerians to celebrate the New Year peacefully and joyfully.
The announcement came through an official statement released on Monday. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, issued the statement. She spoke on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. The minister encouraged Nigerians to embrace values linked with the Christmas season. Specifically, he highlighted love, peace, humility, and sacrifice as guiding principles.
Furthermore, he urged citizens to use the season for reflection and gratitude. He also called on Nigerians to pray for peace and national stability. Improved security and sustainable development featured strongly in his message. Importantly, the minister addressed Nigerians regardless of faith or ethnic background. He emphasized unity and mutual respect during the festive celebrations.
Meanwhile, citizens were advised to remain law-abiding throughout the holiday period. The minister also stressed the importance of staying security-conscious at all times. According to the statement, celebrations should promote harmony and social responsibility. The festive season, therefore, offers a chance to strengthen national unity.
It also provides an opportunity to show kindness and compassion to others. Moreover, Nigerians were encouraged to renew commitment to nation-building efforts.
