The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive family planning and equitable healthcare services. This initiative aligns with efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage across Nigeria.
At the Abuja close-out ceremony of the Inclusive Family Planning (IFPLAN) project, officials highlighted the program’s significant achievements. The five-year IFPLAN project, funded by UK Aid and implemented by Sightsavers and partners, focused on disability inclusion in healthcare.
The project reached 1,912 persons with disabilities across 18 communities through social and behavior-change interventions. Additionally, 544,759 persons with disabilities received family planning information via radio, digital platforms, and community engagement. Stigma-reduction messages reached 3,002,265 people without disabilities.
Healthcare accessibility improved through audits in 24 facilities and upgrades in 23 centers. The program also trained 1,500 healthcare providers, strengthening inclusive services nationwide.
Dr. Salma Ibrahim-Anas, Special Adviser to the President on Health, praised IFPLAN as a model for inclusive development. She emphasized dismantling barriers that prevent persons with disabilities from accessing healthcare services.
Prof. Joy Shuaibu, Country Director of Sightsavers Nigeria, highlighted that empowering healthcare workers ensures sustainable impact. The next phase will institutionalize disability inclusion in health policies and national programs.
Government officials reiterated their readiness to expand inclusive family planning nationwide. Kaduna State has already allocated funds in the 2026 budget, demonstrating strong political commitment.
The IFPLAN project proves that intentional inclusion creates real impact, ensuring every Nigerian can access family planning, healthcare, and empowerment opportunities.
