Tension has risen across Bayelsa State after reports emerged that Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo collapsed in Government House, Yenagoa. The incident reportedly happened on Thursday afternoon, creating widespread concern among residents and political observers.
Sources revealed that officials moved him to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa for urgent treatment. However, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Ben Akpedi, did not answer calls for confirmation. This silence deepened public curiosity and heightened speculation about his condition.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor’s media aide, Doubara Atasi, confirmed the incident but refused to share details. He simply acknowledged the situation and immediately ended the call, leaving many questions unanswered.
Observers also noted Ewhrudjakpo’s absence during Governor Douye Diri’s recent resignation announcement from the Peoples Democratic Party. The governor declared his exit from the PDP in October and joined the All Progressives Congress with several lawmakers. Yet, Ewhrudjakpo’s stance on the political shift remained unaddressed.
Governor Diri cited “obvious reasons” for leaving the PDP but offered no specific grievances. His Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, later confirmed the announcement. He stated that the decision came after long consultations with senior state figures during an expanded executive council meeting in Yenagoa.
Alabrah explained that the governor thanked supporters for their loyalty and encouraged them to stay involved. He emphasized Diri’s commitment to building a stronger and more vibrant Bayelsa.
