UNICEF has raised serious concern about rising malnutrition levels among children in Ebonyi State. The organisation made this known in Abakaliki during the handover of 2,832 cartons of small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements. The supplements were procured through UNICEF’s Child Nutrition Match-Fund project to support vulnerable children.
During the event, the Chief of the UNICEF Field Office, Mrs. Juliet Chiluwe, revealed that stunting rates among children under five have continued to climb. She noted that Ebonyi recorded 20.6 per cent in 2015, 25 per cent in 2018, and 32 per cent in 2024. Also stressed that the rapid rise demands urgent action and stronger nutrition interventions across the state.
Chiluwe explained that the match-fund project encourages shared responsibility between government, UNICEF, and partners. She praised the Ebonyi Government for investing 150 million naira, which UNICEF matched to secure the nutrient supplements. She added that the partnership shows how sustainable financing can support long-term nutrition efforts.
Chiluwe highlighted the importance of nutrition during the first 1,000 days of a child’s life. Said effective use of the SQ-LNS can enhance growth, immunity, and cognitive development. Urged the state to guarantee smooth distribution of the supplements to primary health centres and remote communities.
Governor Francis Nwifuru received the items on behalf of the state. His Deputy, Patricia Obila, represented him at the ceremony. Obila assured UNICEF that the supplements would reach the intended beneficiaries. And expressed hope that the interventions will help reduce malnutrition and improve child survival across the state.
