Super Falcons striker Uchenna Kanu has expressed her disappointment at being left out of Nigeria’s squad for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco. The team, led by coach Justine Madugu, claimed a record-extending 10th continental title, coming from two goals down to defeat the hosts 3–2 in the final.
Kanu, 28, who played for Nigeria at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympics, missed out on the WAFCON squad while recovering from an injury that kept her sidelined for six months. Despite feeling she had done enough to make the team, Kanu said she received little communication from the coaching staff regarding her omission, learning via a last-minute text from the coach just days before the tournament.
Since returning from injury in March, she has featured in seven games for Racing Louisville in the NWSL, scoring one goal. She is reportedly out of contract with the club but remains hopeful of rejoining the national team ahead of the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco.
Kanu, who made her national team debut in 2019 after excelling at the U-17 and U-20 levels, has scored seven goals in 27 appearances for the Super Falcons. She continues to support her teammates and recently launched her memoir, Football, My Escape, in Lagos.
