Tony Elumelu, chairman of United Bank for Africa, has cancelled his annual TOE All-White Party. The decision follows the tragic fire at Afriland Towers in Lagos. Six staff members lost their lives in the devastating September incident. The high-rise blaze shook the entire business community across the city.
Elumelu shared the announcement via his Instagram story on Tuesday. He explained that he and his wife, Awele, faced a “difficult decision” about this year’s celebration. The couple emphasized that the period requires reflection and compassion. They intend to dedicate the season to remembering those who died in the tragedy.
“We’ve received many messages asking about our annual TOE All-White Party on December 23,” he wrote. Elumelu expressed gratitude for the excitement surrounding the event each year. He added that the party will return in 2026 with renewed love and togetherness.
The billionaire philanthropist chairs Heirs Holdings and Transcorp and founded the Tony Elumelu Foundation. He was also named among Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2020. Tony and Dr. Awele Vivian Elumelu have been married since 1993. Together, they have seven children.
Elumelu urged followers to use this festive season to honour and remember the victims. He wished everyone a peaceful and meaningful Christmas. By postponing the party, he reinforced a message of empathy and community solidarity.
