The Nigeria Customs Service has entered a new phase of leadership restructuring after the Nigeria Customs Service Board approved major management appointments and special promotions. The decisions came during the board’s 64th regular meeting held on Tuesday and chaired by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun.
The board confirmed the elevation of five Deputy Comptroller-Generals and eight Assistant Comptroller-Generals. This marks one of the most significant management shake-ups within the Service in recent years. According to Customs spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada, the appointments follow the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023, and the Federal Character principles in the Constitution.
Those promoted to Deputy Comptroller-General include Baba Imam, Isah Umar, Tijjani Abe, Timi Bomodi and Oluyomi Adebakin. Their elevation fills leadership gaps created by recent retirements and supports the Service’s broader operational goals.
The board also approved eight new Assistant Comptroller-Generals. They are C.G. Ogbonna, I. Abba-Aji, G.M. Haruna, E.J. Edelduok, G. Gaura, I. Isyaku, M.S. Shuaibu and M.D. Malah. These appointments are expected to strengthen policy execution and improve border security oversight.
In addition, ten officers earned Special Promotion for exceptional performance and service. The recipients span ranks from Comptroller to Deputy Superintendent. The board explained that the category rewards officers whose contributions enhanced revenue, operations, or national security.
Edun reaffirmed the board’s commitment to building a motivated workforce capable of driving reforms. He stressed the need for continuous adaptation to global trade dynamics and stronger internal systems.
The latest promotions come as Customs intensifies reforms in process automation, command restructuring and anti-smuggling operations. The board noted that the new leadership structure will support effective succession planning and improve overall service delivery.
