Clemens Fritz, Werder Bremen’s head of professional football, has expressed strong confidence in Victor Boniface despite the striker’s slow start at the club. The Nigerian forward has played eight matches without scoring since joining on loan from Bayer Leverkusen shortly before the summer transfer window closed. However, Fritz believes Boniface will soon justify the high expectations placed on him.
Speaking at Werder’s annual general meeting, Fritz compared Boniface’s early form to that of club legend Ailton. The Brazilian initially struggled before becoming a key figure with 28 goals during the historic 2003/04 double-winning season. Fritz noted that Boniface also benefits from close coaching support, similar to how Ailton thrived under Thomas Schaaf.
Boniface arrived in Bremen with limited match fitness due to previous injuries. Werder has focused on integrating him gradually, often introducing him from the bench. Fritz stressed that the approach aims to rebuild the striker physically and mentally for long-term impact. He added that the club remains patient and committed to his development.
Fritz highlighted that Boniface is a player who needs the right environment to flourish. He insisted Werder Bremen provides the support and stability required to unlock his full potential. According to Fritz, Boniface is determined to repay the trust shown in him.
The club’s one-year loan arrangement, without a purchase option, is designed to benefit both sides. Clemens Fritz concluded that he remains convinced Boniface will meet expectations and grow into an important contributor for the Green-Whites.
