The Federal Ministry of Education has invited qualified Nigerian graduates to apply for the 2027/2028 Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowship Plan, with applications closing on October 20, 2026.
The scholarships, which are tenable in the United Kingdom, cover one-year taught Master’s programmes and doctoral studies of up to three years. The notice was issued by the ministry’s Department of Scholarship Awards, formerly known as the Federal Scholarship Board.
For the Master’s category, applicants must hold a first degree with at least a Second Class Upper Division. Doctoral applicants must have a relevant Master’s degree as well as at least a Second Class Lower Division in their first degree.
Candidates for both categories must have secured admission into at least two UK institutions, while PhD applicants are also required to provide a supporting statement from a prospective supervisor. Evidence of participation in the National Youth Service Corps is also part of the eligibility requirements.
The ministry said applications will be assessed based on academic merit, development impact after completion and the quality of the proposed study plan.
Applications must be submitted through the Electronic Application System. Candidates are required to register on the portal, complete the online form and upload documents including passport photographs, academic transcripts, birth certificates and UK admission letters.
Applicants with foreign certificates must provide official translations and evaluations. The ministry also advised candidates to align their proposed studies with Nigeria’s development priorities, including education, healthcare, governance, climate and environment, engineering, science and technology, food and nutrition, and humanitarian emergencies.
Completed applications must be submitted by October 20, 2026, with further information available through the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission and the ministry’s scholarship department.
