Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment and claims her recent suspension from the Nigerian Senate was a deliberate attempt to silence her.
In a BBC interview, she recounted inappropriate advances from Akpabio, including suggestive hand-squeezing and comments about her wedding ring. She was suspended on March 6 for “gross misconduct” after a dispute over seating arrangements, a move she describes as politically motivated.
Senate Deputy Chief Whip Onyekachi Nwaebonyi denied her claims, arguing that her legislative activities prove otherwise. Undeterred, Akpoti-Uduaghan took her case to a United Nations forum, urging international bodies to intervene and hold the Nigerian Senate accountable for its treatment of female lawmakers.
Her allegations have sparked widespread reactions, intensifying discussions on gender dynamics and power abuse in Nigerian politics.
