The South African Football Association (SAFA) has announced plans to formally appeal FIFA’s decision to deduct three points from Bafana Bafana and impose a fine. The punishment followed after midfielder Teboho Mokoena was fielded. Despite being ineligible during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Lesotho in March.
Bafana Bafana had originally celebrated a 2-0 victory on March 21. However, FIFA’s disciplinary committee later overturned the result. Citing that Mokoena should have been suspended after collecting two earlier yellow cards in the group stage. The ruling awarded Lesotho a 3-0 win and docked South Africa three valuable points.
The decision has reshaped Group C standings. South Africa, who once held a six-point cushion over Nigeria, now lead by only three points. At the same time, Benin Republic has climbed to the top on goal difference. Placing additional pressure on Bafana’s qualification hopes.
Reacting to the ruling, SAFA voiced strong dissatisfaction with the process. “We are deeply disappointed with this unprecedented outcome, which was delivered by a single-member panel without reasons, and without the opportunity to present legal arguments,” the association stated. SAFA confirmed it has requested written reasons and will lodge a formal appeal with FIFA’s Appeals Committee within the required 10-day period.
Looking ahead, South Africa faces a must-win situation. They need victories in their final two matches against Lesotho and Zimbabwe in October to remain in control of their qualification path. Meanwhile, Benin Republic could benefit the most, as they host Rwanda next before traveling to Nigeria in a decisive encounter. Nigeria, now only three points behind, will also be pushing hard with upcoming fixtures against Zimbabwe and Benin.
With the group standings now tighter than ever, the final round of matches promises intense competition and high drama.
