The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to rise above tribal, religious, and political divides to build a stronger and united nation.
Obi made this appeal on Sunday during a courtesy visit to the Olubadan-designate, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, at his Bodija private residence in Ibadan, Oyo State.
“We have no other country except Nigeria. We must all unite and love each other to build a better nation,” Obi urged.
Respect to Royalty and Congratulatory Visit
Obi explained that his visit was first to pay respect to the Olubadan-designate and to congratulate him on his upcoming installation as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
He described Oba Ladoja as a leader with immense experience and stressed that Ibadan holds a strategic role in Nigeria’s political, social, and economic development.
“Ibadan is central to Nigeria’s growth. With his background as a senator, governor, and business leader, I believe Oba Ladoja will succeed as Olubadan,” Obi noted.
Obi also highlighted the role of institutions such as the University of Ibadan, which has produced leaders from across Nigeria, as proof of the city’s national importance.
Olubadan-Designate Pledges Service, Not Glamour
In his response, Oba Ladoja expressed gratitude and emphasized that the throne of Ibadan is not about glamour but service
“Many people erroneously believe the throne is for glamour. The time of glamour is gone; now, it is about service and what you bring to the people,” he said.
Other Political Leaders Pay Homage
The visit also attracted other political figures. Members of the House of Representatives, Sina Oyedeji (Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Iwajowa/Kajola Federal Constituency) and Adebayo Adepoju (Ibarapa North/Ibarapa Central Federal Constituency), both of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), also paid homage to the Olubadan-designate.
They described Oba Ladoja as “a father to all” and stressed the importance of seeking his blessings ahead of his coronation.
“He advised us to deliver for our people and ensure we do not disappoint them,” the lawmakers told journalists.
Why This Matters for Nigeria
Peter Obi’s call for unity comes at a critical time when Nigeria continues to grapple with ethnic tensions, religious divides, and political rivalries. His message echoes the growing demand for leaders to prioritize nation-building and selfless leadership.
The Olubadan stool, being one of the most revered traditional institutions in the country, remains central not only to Ibadanland but to Nigeria’s broader socio-political landscape.
