Nigeria has lost one of its most revered royal fathers, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland. The iconic monarch passed away at the age of 91 on Sunday, 13th July. Shortly after the nation began mourning the death of his longtime friend, former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Oba Sikiru Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, ruled Ijebuland for over six decades, making him one of the longest-reigning traditional rulers in Nigerian history. His passing marks the end of an era defined by remarkable leadership, traditional wisdom, and unwavering service to his people.
A respected voice not only in Ogun State but also across the nation, the Awujale played a vital role in shaping the sociopolitical direction of Ijebuland. Under his reign, the town witnessed significant cultural growth, infrastructural development, and increased political relevance within Nigeria’s southwestern region.
Breaking the news on social media, Prince Adedoyin Alatishe, a member of the Ijebu royal family, expressed his sorrow in a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter): “Baami Ogbagba agbatewole 💔. Erin wo. Omo anikilaya saagbu,” a Yoruba expression mourning the fall of a great figure.
Oba Adetona’s legacy goes beyond royalty. He was known for his progressive views, strong support for education, and advocacy for good governance. Throughout his reign, he remained a powerful symbol of tradition, dignity, and resilience.
