The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has clarified why it withheld the certificate of Lagos corps member Ushie Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, and extended her service year by two months.
Contrary to viral claims linking the sanction to her online criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, NYSC stated the action was purely disciplinary. According to the statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Raye failed to attend the April 2025 mandatory biometrics clearance, violating the NYSC Bye-Laws.
NYSC confirmed that she was among 131 corps members who faced similar sanctions for missing compulsory clearances. The service stressed that such penalties, including service extensions, are standard procedure and not politically motivated.
Raye had gained public attention in March after a TikTok video where she lamented Nigeria’s rising inflation and economic hardship went viral. NYSC urged the public not to politicize the matter, reaffirming its commitment to fairness and the rule of law.
