The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has denied claims that it extended the service year of Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, in retaliation for her viral TikTok video criticizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and calling Lagos a “smelling state.”
Raye’s video, posted via her handle @talktoraye, sparked controversy online for its bold critique of Nigeria’s living conditions and leadership. She later alleged that NYSC officials pressured her to take down the video and even threatened her safety.
Amid rising attention, activist Omoyele Sowore claimed the NYSC had extended her service year by two months over her statements. He vowed to protest at the Passing Out Parade if the issue wasn’t resolved.
However, NYSC spokesperson Carol Embu dismissed the allegation, saying:
“NYSC is not an irresponsible organisation; we follow rules. If she has issues, we’ll address them through due process.”
She added that extensions are only issued at the point of passing out, based on official criteria, not politics or social media posts.
As of now, Raye has not confirmed any extension, and the claim remains unverified.
