Leading health and nutrition experts are calling for immediate action. To address rising cases of malnutrition and poor dietary practices affecting people at every life stage across Nigeria and Africa. This call was made during the “Nutrition for All Life Stages Workshop,” hosted by Nestlé Nigeria in Agbara, Ogun State.
During the event, Dr. Kanalio Olaloku of Nestlé Central West Africa and public health nutritionist Patience Chimah-Maduboko highlighted the urgent need for improved nutrition. Through fortified foods, healthier food choices, and increased public awareness.
Dr. Olaloku warned that iron deficiency anaemia remains a critical yet often overlooked health threat in the region. Referred to as a form of hidden hunger, this condition severely affects learning, immunity, and productivity, despite showing few visible signs. She identified iron, iodine, and vitamin A as key nutrients commonly lacking in many Nigerian diets.
According to Olaloku, the widespread consumption of plant-based meals that offer limited bioavailable iron. Coupled with low adherence to iron supplementation among pregnant women, contributes to the deficiency.
She stressed the importance of better food habits. Awareness of iron-rich options like liver, fish, and watermelon seeds, and consistent deworming for children.
She also urged stakeholders across government, health sectors, communities, and the private sector to collaborate on sustainable nutrition strategies, including the fortification of commonly consumed staples such as flour, salt, and cereals.
In her presentation, Chimah-Maduboko emphasized that nutritional needs vary across life stages. And that poor nutrition during one phase can negatively impact health later in life. She advocated for exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of infancy, timely introduction of fortified complementary foods, and targeted nutrition for adolescents to support brain and body development.
She also addressed common parenting concerns. Including picky eating in toddlers, advising caregivers to remain patient and creative.
The workshop featured expert-led discussions, educational materials, and a guided tour of Nestlé’s production facility. Underscoring the importance of proper nutrition as a foundation for national health and development.
