At the ongoing National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, Team Ekiti continued its remarkable performance by clinching gold in the male basketball category on Thursday.
In a nail-biting final, Team Ekiti edged out Team Lagos 19-18, sealing victory in a match that kept spectators on their feet. Both sides displayed impressive skill, determination, and composure, but Ekiti’s resilience proved decisive in the closing moments.
Reacting to the triumph, State Basketball Coach, Adetayo Awojinrin, expressed immense pride in his players. He noted that despite facing tough opponents in the group stage, the team’s discipline and determination carried them through to secure the ultimate prize. According to him, this victory will inspire the young athletes to aim for more gold medals in the future.
Beyond basketball, Team Ekiti also made headlines in other events. In Kungfu, Funbi Adedoyin showcased grit in the 48kg female category, earning a bronze medal after a series of intense bouts. Her coach, Ronke Raji, commended her fighting spirit against formidable opponents from across the country.
Ekiti’s dominance extended to para-sports as well. Suleiman Abdulazeez delivered an outstanding performance, winning gold in discus and silver in shot put. His success further strengthened Ekiti’s reputation as a breeding ground for versatile athletes.
In recognition of their standout displays, three Ekiti athletes — Abdulazeez Suleiman (para-athletics), Precious Ayodele (Ayo Olopon), and Damilola Oni (cricket) — have received invitations from their respective national federations for advanced training and representation.
With two gold, three silver, and three bronze medals, Team Ekiti has firmly established itself among the top contenders at National Youth Games Asaba 2025. Their growing medal tally not only highlights their talent but also signals a promising future for sports development in the state.
