The Lagos State Government has announced a traffic diversion plan in preparation for emergency repairs on the Independence/Mekwen Bridge, which connects motorists to the Marina and CMS areas. According to the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Oshiyemi, the diversion will commence on March 19 and continue until May 26, 2025.
During the repair period, the following routes will be affected:
- Closed: The stretch from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) through Bonny Camp Bridge to Independence Bridge.
- Restricted Access: The service lane at Bonny Camp Underpass Bridge inbound Independence Bridge.
- Open to Traffic: The service lane from Ahmadu Bello Way to Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue will remain accessible.
To minimize congestion, the Lagos State Government has provided alternative routes for different categories of road users:
- For motorists heading to Victoria Island from Ahmadu Bello Way:
- Use Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue → Akin Adesola Street → Falomo Roundabout → Obafemi Awolowo Road → Ring Road.
- For those going to the 3rd Mainland Bridge:
- Take Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue → Akin Adesola Street → Alfred Rewane Road → Osborne Road → Ring Road.
- For commuters traveling to Inner Marina and CMS from Ahmadu Bello Way:
- Follow Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue → Akin Adesola Street → Falomo Roundabout → Obafemi Awolowo Road → J.K. Randle Road.
- For drivers heading to Ahmadu Bello Way from Inner Marina or CMS:
- Use the designated access routes available.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will oversee the traffic situation throughout the repair period. The government urges motorists to exercise patience and adhere to traffic directions to avoid unnecessary delays.
This repair project is part of the Federal Ministry of Works’ broader plan for road rehabilitation in Lagos, aimed at improving infrastructure and ensuring smoother transportation networks.
