The Kwara State Sports Commission has announced the dissolution of all sports associations in the state with immediate effect.
The announcement came through a statement issued in Ilorin on Thursday by the Commission’s Press Secretary, Saheed Abdullahi. According to the release, the decision followed a resolution reached at the Commission’s board meeting on September 12, 2025. Here members deliberated extensively on the performance and activities of the associations before approving their dissolution.
Explaining the move, the Commission stated that the restructuring aims to inject new, committed, and passionate members into the associations. However, it added that some of the active former members may be retained to ensure continuity and improved service delivery.
The Commission also directed affected officials to immediately hand over documents, records, and materials belonging to their associations. To the respective secretaries to complete the dissolution process. While appreciating the outgoing members for their contributions. The Commission urged them to continue supporting sports development in Kwara and remain available for future assignments.
This decision comes on the heels of recent controversies within the state’s sports sector. Earlier, Commission Chairman Bola Magaji pledged decisive action against athletics officials whose lapses led to the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) suspending the Kwara State Athletics Association.
The AFN had placed an indefinite ban on the association after discovering that banned coach Hammid Muritala. Who is serving a 10-year sanction for administering banned substances to a youth athlete was still involved in athletics activities. Despite his suspension since October 14, 2022, Muritala was reportedly part of Kwara’s contingent to the Golden League in Benin City. A move that drew sharp criticism.
Magaji, while addressing the issue, assured stakeholders that reforms were ongoing and reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to protecting the future of young athletes in Kwara State.
