The Republic of Korea has reaffirmed its dedication to deepening ties with Nigeria, particularly in economic cooperation, security, and cultural exchanges. Speaking at a news conference in Abuja to mark the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations, Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Kim Pankyu, highlighted the significant progress in bilateral relations.
Key initiatives include fostering an investment-friendly environment, implementing trade and taxation agreements, and strengthening military and security collaborations. Korea has been a major trade partner, accounting for 10% of Korea-Africa trade and over 70% of Korean project contracts in Africa. The first-ever Korea-Africa Summit played a pivotal role in advancing high-level discussions with Nigerian ministers across multiple sectors.
Additionally, Korea is expanding digital capacity-building efforts through projects worth millions of dollars, supporting Nigeria’s governance and multimedia learning in schools. The Korean Cultural Center and Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) continue to promote cultural exchange programs. Korea’s biotech investments, including SD Biosensor’s HIV rapid test kits, further demonstrate the growing economic partnership.
Looking ahead, both countries are working on finalizing key agreements such as the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement and trade promotion MOUs. These developments underscore Korea’s long-term commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria in trade, security, technology, and cultural cooperation.
