The Federal Government of Nigeria (FG) has introduced the Irrigate Nigeria Project (INP) to enhance agricultural productivity and increase farmers’ income. The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), in collaboration with the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund (RHIDF), leads the initiative.
This project provides sustainable irrigation systems, allowing farmers to cultivate crops year-round, even in dry seasons. As a result, Nigeria’s agricultural sector will experience transformation, leading to stronger food security.
According to Halilu Khalil, Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of NASENI, irrigation significantly boosts farm yields and revenue. He stressed that reliable water sources enable farmers to complete multiple farming cycles annually, reducing reliance on seasonal rainfall.
To support this, the project offers modern irrigation technology, high-quality seeds, fertilizers, and expert guidance. These resources help farmers achieve long-term agricultural sustainability.
The Irrigate Nigeria Project includes four core components: Centralized irrigation systems to serve farming communities efficiently, Enhanced agricultural inputs, such as quality seeds and fertilizers, to boost productivity, A sustainable commercial model, ensuring long-term success without financial strain on farmers, and An innovative repayment system, where farmers contribute portions of their harvests (e.g., rice paddy) to a strategic food reserve, stabilizing commodity prices and supporting exports.
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, commended the initiative for its role in economic empowerment, job creation, and national stability. Likewise, Dr. Mohammed Dahiru, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Technology Transfer (PICTT), emphasized that the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model will guarantee efficient and long-lasting implementation.
The Irrigate Nigeria Project represents a significant step toward modernizing Nigeria’s agricultural sector. By integrating advanced irrigation systems with strategic partnerships, the initiative will increase food production, reduce imports, and accelerate economic growth. As it expands nationwide, it is set to revolutionize agribusiness and bolster food security for future generations.
