In a significant move to improve the living conditions of displaced persons and refugees, the Federal Government has successfully relocated about 40 households to a newly established resettlement city in Keffi, Nasarawa State. This initiative aims to provide decent accommodation and enhanced welfare for individuals who have been displaced due to conflicts and crises.
According to Alhaji Tijani Ahmed, the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), more than 300 individuals are set to benefit from this allocation. He emphasized that the selection criteria were based on voluntary participation and profiling, ensuring that those who willingly opted to stay received housing.
Mr. Earnest Cho, a Cameroonian refugee and leader of the resettled group, expressed immense gratitude to the Federal Government for providing free accommodation and a farming-friendly environment. He noted that the cost of living in Abuja was significantly higher, making this relocation a welcomed relief for many refugees.
However, while appreciating the provision of solar-powered lights within the settlement, Cho appealed to the government to further improve their living conditions by ensuring a stable electricity supply.
The Federal Government’s resettlement initiative in Keffi marks a significant step towards addressing the challenges faced by displaced persons and refugees in Nigeria. With sustainable housing, livelihood programs, security measures, and healthcare support, this program provides a beacon of hope for those affected by displacement. As the initiative continues, further infrastructural improvements and increased government support will enhance the quality of life for residents in the resettlement city.
