ECOWAS is set to enhance its counter-terrorism strategy by integrating cutting-edge technology to combat violent extremism and insurgency in the subregion. Air Commodore Sampson Eyekosi, Chairman of the ECOWAS Standing Force (ESF) Logistics Concept, and Depot Policies made this announcement during the closing ceremony of a validation meeting on the ECOWAS standby force’s logistics concept and depot policies in Abuja.
The ESF, a 5,000-strong counter-terrorism force established to curb the rise of violent extremism and unconstitutional changes of government in West Africa, has resolved to harness advanced technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and drones, to strengthen its operations.
“We want to leverage technology to fight against terrorism, insurgency, and other emerging threats, including climate change,” Eyekosi stated. “Deploying AI, drones, and other innovations will significantly enhance security measures and surveillance across the region.”
“As the ECOWAS Logistics Depot becomes fully functional, it will play a crucial role in ensuring long-term peace and security in the region,” he said.
Eyekosi urged political leaders, member states, and key stakeholders to actively support ECOWAS’ security initiatives. “We must engage our political leaders, heads of state, and government authorities across West Africa in a collective effort. Security is a shared responsibility, requiring a whole-of-society approach,” he concluded.
With the integration of technology, increased regional collaboration, and the establishment of a fully functional logistics depot, ECOWAS is taking proactive steps to strengthen security in West Africa. As the organization enhances its counter-terrorism framework, it remains committed to creating a safer and more stable subregion for all its member states.
