The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has urged stronger collaboration among police forces across its 15 member countries to address rising insecurity in the region.
The call came during the ECOWAS Police Focal Point Officers’ meeting in Abuja on August 6, where officials reviewed strategies to strengthen the police arm of the ECOWAS Standby Force.
Sani Adamu, Acting Head of Peace Support Operations, said the region faces increasing criminal attacks, cyber threats, and cross-border crimes. He stressed that building a well-equipped, unified police network is crucial for swift crisis response and long-term peace.
Sierra Leone’s Deputy Inspector General of Police, Sahr Senesi, also highlighted the need for an operational and standardised police deployment roster, describing it as vital for restoring order and protecting citizens during emergencies.
FAAN officials emphasised that regional cooperation, interoperability, and professionalism remain key to safeguarding West Africa’s stability.
