The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has been thrown into mourning following the death of its pioneer Head of the Civil Service, Mrs. Grace Adayilo, who passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 1, 2025.
A Trailblazing Career in Public Service
Grace Adayilo made history on October 6, 2024, when President Bola Tinubu approved her appointment as the first-ever Head of Service of the FCT. Her appointment was groundbreaking, not only because she was the pioneer occupant of the position but also because she was the first female Head of Service in the FCT’s history.
Before her historic elevation, Adayilo had a distinguished career in public service, serving as the Permanent Secretary of the Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat.
Tributes and Reactions
Her passing has left a huge vacuum in the administrative structure of the FCT. Political leaders, public servants, and residents are expected to pay tributes in the coming days. Already, notable figures such as FCT Minister Nyesom Wike have expressed shock and sorrow at her sudden demise.
Legacy of Leadership
Adayilo’s tenure was marked by her commitment to reforming the civil service, enhancing efficiency, and empowering women in leadership within the FCT administration. Her appointment was widely celebrated as a sign of progress and inclusivity in Nigeria’s public service.
