The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Safety Commission, has issued a stop-work notice on a six-storey building under construction at 28, Saka Tinubu Street, Victoria Island, over safety violations that pose risks to lives and properties.
Residents Raise Alarm
Two weeks earlier, residents of the area had raised concerns, saying the construction was causing severe damage to nearby buildings, vehicles, and endangering pedestrians.
In a petition, residents lamented:
“Boulders and planks keep falling into other compounds, damaging walls, windows, ceilings, and cars. More importantly, these falling materials could harm innocent people and even lead to death.”
Safety Commission’s Findings
Following The PUNCH’s September 2, 2025 report, the DG/CEO of the Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, ordered further investigation. Officials discovered that the contractors ignored an earlier abatement notice and failed to report to the commission as directed.
The commission stated:
Project Engineer’s Response
The Project Engineer, identified as Otunba Ayeni, claimed work on the site was completed. However, safety officials faulted this, noting that infractions remained unresolved and key regulatory approvals were not obtained.
Ownership Speculation
Residents alleged that the controversial property is owned by a top traditional ruler in the South-West, though his identity has not been disclosed.
