The Federal Government has announced plans to disburse cash transfers to 2.2 million poor households across Nigeria before the end of August.
Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Tanko Sununu, disclosed this on Monday, August 18, during an interview on Channels Television. He explained that the initiative is part of efforts to cushion the impact of rising economic hardship on vulnerable citizens.
According to him, the National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO) will identify beneficiaries through the national social register. The intervention falls under the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) scheme, which has already provided ₦419 billion to about five million Nigerians.
Sununu further noted that 71% of past beneficiaries were in the northern region, while 21% were in the south, reflecting government’s target of reaching the poorest households.
He assured that the program will not only provide immediate relief but also strengthen Nigeria’s social protection system for long-term poverty reduction.
