Food prices in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are gradually dropping, according to a recent market survey. Prices vary by location, with markets in city centers generally more expensive than those in satellite towns.
Key findings include:
- Depending on the market, a 50kg bag of rice now sells for N70,000 to N93,000, down from as high as N105,000 in January.
- The price of a bag of onions has dropped from N180,000 to as low as N50,000 in some markets.
- Groundnut oil and Garri have also seen price reductions, while yams, plantains, and peppers have become more expensive.
Traders attribute the decrease to a slight drop in fuel prices, but consumers believe further measures such as improved security and farming incentives are needed to sustain affordability.
