The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, has urged Nigerians to take pride in and safeguard the revitalized National Arts Theatre. He described the landmark as a vital repository of Nigeria’s rich history and cultural heritage.
During an inspection of the Lagos-based monument with members of the Bankers’ Committee, Cardoso praised their vision and investment in the project. He highlighted the theatre’s historical significance, stating that it represents the essence of the Nigerian people and plays a key role in the nation’s creative industry.
Cardoso emphasized the creative sector’s vast potential, estimating its contribution could reach $25 billion. He noted that, if properly harnessed, this sector could drive economic growth, create jobs, and increase revenue.
Reflecting on years of neglect after FESTAC 77, Cardoso expressed satisfaction with the ongoing restoration. He affirmed that the upgrades meet international standards. He called on all Nigerians, not just the Bankers’ Committee, to take responsibility for preserving this national treasure.
As the National Arts Theatre reclaims its former glory, Nigerians are encouraged to take ownership of this iconic space. Its successful restoration represents both a cultural revival and an economic opportunity. Protecting and celebrating this national treasure is a shared responsibility that promises a brighter future for Nigeria’s artistic and economic landscape.
